Let’s stop thinking that great leadership is about finding the answers.
It’s about asking the right questions.
Here’s why great leaders always ask great questions:
Think the key to great leadership is having all the answers? Think again.
In my experience, being a good leader means asking questions. Why?
If you’re in a leadership position, there’s a good chance you’ve had the following thought: “I’m the boss, dammit. I should fix this problem!”
Now that’s a perfectly natural way to feel—and it might even be the right way to feel.
But more often than not, as a leader, you’re probably better off stepping back and asking questions.
Because asking questions can help you identify problems, uncover unmet needs, and create innovative solutions that serve everybody involved.
Great leaders are always asking good questions:
- They ask questions that get to the root of an issue.
- They ask questions that help them understand a problem (and its context).
- They ask questions that help them understand solutions to problems (and their context).
- The best leaders also know how to ask good follow-up questions and encourage others to do so as well.
It might take some time to get used to this way of thinking, but in the end, it will benefit everyone involved!
